La Nuova Commedia

Dante's Cosmology

Dante's Cosmology

La Nuova Commedia

Inferno

Salimmo suso, ei primo ed io secondo,

Tanto ch’io vidi delle cose belle

Che porta il ciel, per un pertugio tondo;

E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

Dante, Inferno, Canto xxxiv, 136-139[1]

Fire

I write these words

With a mind, a hand

A body

On fire

A soul is born

And at its center

Is a cosmos

Of memories

The past

Burning in my depths

A soul

A body

A Universe

Birthed in fire

Dark Matter

Is my Dark Mother,

I see her in deep in space

Burning

In my heart.

The primordial fireball

The stars,

The fire of

My ancestors

Dance around the fire

Dance around the Sun

Dance around my soul

On fire

My Ancestors,

The stars.

Purgatorio

Io ritornai da la santissim’onda

Rifatto si come piante novelle

Rinovellate di novella fronda

Puro e disposto a salire a le stelle.

Dante, Purgatorio, Canto xxxiii, 142-145[2]

This dream I have

Standing

In this moment,

At the birth canal,

the alembic,

I realize the eschaton

Today

In this dream

Universe

Giving birth

through

the chaotic matrix

womb of past and future

Heaven and Earth

There is beauty in this bloody moment

In this pregnant moment

Birthing

Birthing

The perfectly fallen flesh

Of humanity

Blood and bone

And stardust and love

Searching for mother’s breast

Looking up

At God

At mother

At the stars.

Paradiso

All’altra fantasia qui manco possa;

Ma gia volgeva il mio disiro e il velle,

Si come rota ch’egualmente e mossa,

L’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle.¥

Dante, Paradiso, Canto xxxiii, 142-145[3]

This dream we had

Of a future not built

By engineers

But by poets

Of a journey not on a straight road

Of lines and plans

But of expansion

Into possibility

The vastness of the Imagination

Long ago

We sat around the fires

Under those stars

Burning birthing

Dreams stories

And around those same stars, danced planets

Dreaming of us.

There was fire that burned from the very start

The fire next time will burn on in my heart

Deep in the heavens is the inferno of the past

Deep in the future is the inferno of the past

Deep in my heart is the possibility of paradise

The paradise of possibility

Dreams of the stars born in my heart

Dreams of possibility born in the stars.
