Last Reminder: Study Interfaith Mysticism in NYC on Sunday

Join us for the class “Interfaith Mysticism” at The New Seminary:

The New Seminary, 2672 Broadway (between 101st and 102nd)

“INTERFAITH MYSTICISM”    Sunday, April 3, 2011 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

If a cosmology is a worldview, mysticism is a way to experience and embody that vision, or to break through into a new worldview.  It can allow one either to create a new cosmology or to experience a cosmology more fully.  The mystic interiorizes the mythology and cosmology of a culture, allowing for new and deeper creative expressions; at the same time, the mystic can travel to the edge of the cosmos and the periphery of a culture, re-imagining and recreating its myths and cosmologies.  Mysticism is often unknown and unnecessary when a cosmology is functional, but when we have become alienated from the cosmos—that is, if a cosmology is dysfunctional as in modernity—we require a mystical transformation, to cross the border into a new way of perceiving.  This can be a perilous journey, however, narrow as a razor’s edge.  Often, mysticism becomes a practice of pure transcendence, of leaving the world behind.  This class will be an exploration of functional mysticisms—those that lead to deeper connection and communion and, ultimately, greater compassion.
