In Solidarity with the 99%

Wall Street, October 2011

“I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:23-24

Live More; Buy Less

“The Department of Pureland Security”

I live in a backwards land

An upside down nation

Where Labor Day is a celebration

Of not working;

Memorial Day forgets

How horrible war really is;

And we remember the birth of Jesus, in a manger,

By buying and buying and buying

As much as we can;

Instead of celebrating

The beautiful chaos of our interdependence,

We celebrate the lonely isolation—

The Original Sin of independence—

With the war chants of the Fourth of July.

I live in a place

Where the woman singing on the train

Is insane,

And the moon

Is loony,

But the man in his car

Talking to ghosts in his ear

Is normal, because spirits are alright here,

As long as they are purchased.

In this upside down nation

We call it “conservative” to chop down forests

And replaced them with shopping malls

So we can live closer to nature,

Naming them after the Indians

Whom we have exterminated.

A place where we thought

That by mispronouncing

Los Angeles and San Rafael

That we could all forget

That this is really Mexico.

This is a country,

Where a people who have been here

For 400 years,

Are called un-American.

And we called this place “home”

And invented enemies

To fear

To make appear so.

And when they acted the part

And brought it back

Home, we were taken aback, shocked, and awed,

And invented an inside out institution called the “Department of Homeland Security”

To protect us from the demons

We made, and our insecurities.

Perhaps,

We need a Department of Pureland Security

Replacing Cheney’s demons with Amhitabha,

Fearful rhetoric, with boundless radiance.

How many engineers

Would it take, I shout,

To figure out what the infinite looks like

Upside down and inside out?
